How to choose a digital camera...or how to choose a Canon G12 anyway!
- Budget - under £500.
- I wanted it to take really good pictures, even in poor light, with not too much fiddling with settings to be done. I am no camera expert, though happy to learn the basics if it results in significantly better results. It needed a reasonable automatic setting though as I won't always have time to play about with it.
- It couldn't be too big. I don't need something so small that it will fit in a girly sized pocket, but I didn't want something huge that screams "steal me" and weighs a ton.
- If lenses are required, they needed to be small. Very small.
- Video is a nice to have...but doesn't need to be amazing quality.
- Something which at least makes a vague attempt to be durable, shockproof, waterproof-ish.
- A screen on the front or a flip round screen would be great. I'm a lonely loser who has to take pictures of themselves, and it is a freakishly hard task with a normal camera arrangement.
- Good battery life. I have yet to meet a camera which doesn't require to be virtually constantly on charge, and I dislike their addiction to power.

The right man
I do this all the time. All the time. I could not count how many times I think, write, speak and act in a way which is designed to persuade, cajole, induce and convince.
Now there is no escaping that sometimes in this life, we have to persuade people. Sometimes you have no choice but to persuade the wrong person into doing the right thing.
But it is a terrible habit to automatically assume persuasion is necessary. Give people space to be the right man. And in your relationships - well if they aren't the right man, what on earth are you doing there anyway?
This is not an excuse to expect people to be psychic and always know what the right thing is without you telling them. It's ok to tell people what you need, just don't assume they need to be persuaded in order for them to give it to you.
It is pointless for me to say any more. Kelly says it better. You should go and read her article in full...here.

Why I don't want a smartphone
Not acceptable. iPhone, you are lovely. But I do not want you. I want the world, not a glowing screen.

My year with Rilke
that will change your life,
make it more than it is—
something wonderful, exceptional,
stones awakening, depths opening to you.
In the dusky bookstalls
old books glimmer gold and brown.
You think of lands you journeyed through,
of paintings and a dress once worn
by a woman you never found again.
And suddenly you know: that was enough.
You rise and there appears before you
in all its longings and hesitations
the shape of what you lived."

In my dream house...
In my dream cottage by the palm-fringed seashore with the hammock on the sandy white beach and the balmy sun setting over the warm blue waters...there is...an Aga.
I love them. I love how you can cook all the things that require hours of oven time and so you never bother to make in a conventional oven. I love how they heat your house and make the warmest loveliest seat ever. I love to make yummy rice pudding stuffed with raisins and cranberries and infused with nutmeg and brown sugar. Heaven!
I long to live in a house with an Aga...and I dont care that I wouldnt need one in my little wooden beach house...or that I probably couldnt even get one there...its still in the dream...
